How do I know if my home needs a rewire?
You don't necessarily need to work that out yourself, that's what we're here for. There isn't a simple rule that says a house needs rewiring once it reaches a certain age. We consider the type and condition of the existing cabling, the circuits you have, any previous electrical work and whether the installation suits how the property is used today. If you're unsure, get in touch and we'll assess it and give you straightforward advice. If a full rewire isn't necessary, we won't tell you it is.
What's the difference between a full and partial rewire?
A full rewire replaces the electrical wiring throughout the property and installs the associated new points and equipment agreed for the project. A partial rewire focuses on a particular part of the property or installation, for example a kitchen renovation, an extension or one section of older wiring. We'll look at what's already there and advise which option makes sense.
How much does a rewire cost?
Unfortunately there isn't one honest price we can give without seeing the property. The cost depends on the size and layout of your home, whether it's occupied, the condition of the existing installation, how many sockets and lighting points you want, accessibility and the overall scope. We'll discuss what you need and provide a detailed quotation based on your property, rather than a generic figure.
How long does a rewire take?
This depends on the property and the extent of the work. A smaller or empty property is very different from a large occupied family home, and partial rewires differ from complete rewires. Once we've surveyed the property and agreed the scope, we can give you a realistic idea of timescale before the work starts.
Can you rewire our house while we're living in it?
Yes, we can. We appreciate moving out isn't an option for everyone, so we undertake occupied rewires. They need more careful planning because we're working around you and the areas you still need to use. We'll talk through the process beforehand and, where practical, phase the work. If the property can be empty, it can make things quicker and easier for everyone.
Will I lose power during the rewire?
At certain stages, yes. We're replacing parts of the installation, so there will be times when circuits or the supply need to be safely isolated. If you're living in the property, we'll explain how this is likely to affect you and plan the work so you know when interruptions are expected.
Do you replace the consumer unit?
Where the project requires a new consumer unit as part of the rewire, this can be included within the work. We don't treat every property as identical, so we'll assess your existing installation and specify what's required as part of your quotation.
Will you make good the walls and floors afterwards?
This is something we'll agree with you before the job begins. Rewiring can require access beneath flooring and channels chased into walls, so the amount of making good varies considerably. We'll explain where access is required and clearly set out what making good is included in your quotation, so you can plan any decorating without surprises.
Is a rewire messy?
We'd be lying if we said there was no mess at all. Rewiring can involve lifting flooring, drilling and chasing walls, so some dust and disruption is unavoidable. We take care while working in your property and aim to keep disruption to a minimum, but we'd rather be upfront than pretend it's completely mess-free.
When is the best time to have a house rewired?
If you know a property needs rewiring, the easiest time is usually before you've decorated, installed new flooring and settled in. Rewiring fits particularly well alongside a renovation, before moving into a newly purchased property, during an extension or when you're already making significant changes to rooms such as the kitchen. You can still rewire a finished or occupied home, it just needs a little more planning.
I've just bought a house. Should I rewire it before moving in?
If the existing installation needs rewiring, doing it while the house is empty can be a very good opportunity. It gives us much easier access, means you're not living around the work and lets you plan sockets and lighting before decorating and furnishing. But don't assume an older house automatically needs a full rewire, speak to us first and we'll advise based on the actual installation.
Do I need a full rewire if I'm having a new kitchen?
Not necessarily. A new kitchen may require new circuits, additional sockets or alterations to accommodate modern appliances, but whether that means a partial rewire or more extensive work depends on your existing installation. It's something we'd assess before deciding what work is actually necessary.
Can I choose where my new sockets and switches go?
Absolutely, and this is one of the big advantages of rewiring. Think about how you use each room: where the TV goes, where you charge your phone, bedside tables, working from home, or a future electric car or air conditioning. We'll discuss the layout with you so your new electrics aren't just safe, but genuinely convenient to live with.
Can you add extra sockets and lighting while you're rewiring?
Yes. A rewire is the perfect opportunity to rethink your electrical layout. We can discuss additional sockets, lighting points, dedicated appliance supplies and other requirements during the planning stage so they're incorporated from the beginning.
Can you help design my lighting, or do I need to know exactly what I want?
Absolutely, and we'd rather be involved early. You might know exactly what you want, or simply know the room doesn't feel right and want ideas. We can look at how you use the space and help you work out where lighting should go, what type would work and where feature lighting could add something special.
I have a photo of some lighting I love. Can you create something similar?
Send it to us. We can't promise every installation can be replicated exactly because every property and product is different, but inspiration photographs are incredibly useful. We'll look at the effect you're trying to achieve and work out an appropriate way of creating it in your space.
Do you only install LED lighting?
No. We undertake all types of lighting work. LED is a huge part of modern lighting because of its versatility and efficiency, particularly for integrated and feature lighting, but we'll recommend what's appropriate for the individual project.
Can you create completely bespoke LED designs?
Yes, and it's something we're particularly keen to do more of. We can explore custom layouts, shapes, profiles, colour-changing installations and lighting integrated into architectural or joinery features, working with suppliers to source the right solution where needed.
Can LED lighting change colour?
Yes, depending on the system installed. LED systems can offer fixed colours, adjustable white temperatures, RGB colour changing or more advanced control. We'll discuss the options with you rather than automatically specifying technology you don't need.
Can you make LED strips look like one continuous line rather than little dots?
Yes. The visible result depends on the LED product, density, profile, diffuser and installation. If a smooth continuous line of light is important to the design, we'll specify the system accordingly.
What colour temperature should I choose?
It depends on the room. Warmer whites generally create a softer, more relaxing atmosphere, while more neutral or cooler temperatures can feel cleaner and brighter. We'll consider the room, its finishes, natural light and how you use it before recommending the right temperature.
Can you put LED lighting under kitchen units?
Yes, and not only underneath wall units. LEDs can be incorporated beneath cabinets, around plinths, beneath worktops, around islands, inside display cabinets and into shelving or other joinery. It's a great way to add another layer of lighting without filling the ceiling with fittings.
Why do I get shadows on my kitchen worktop?
Often it's because the lighting position doesn't correspond properly with where you're standing and working. If the main light source is behind you, your own body can cast a shadow onto the surface. This is why we consider lighting layouts rather than an evenly spaced grid, and under-cabinet task lighting can make a significant difference.
Can you install lighting into shelving or furniture?
Yes. Lighting can be incorporated into shelving, wardrobes, cabinets, media units, drinks cabinets and other bespoke joinery. It's worth speaking to us early if new furniture or joinery is being made, so we can plan the electrical requirements alongside it.
Can you install cinema room lighting?
Yes, and the cinema room shown on this page is one of our completed projects. We can incorporate feature LEDs, colour-changing lighting, staircase illumination, ceiling designs and different lighting zones depending on the room.
Can you design lighting for a home gym or garage?
Definitely, these are exactly the kind of creative projects we'd love to take on. Geometric ceiling lighting, illuminated walls, colour-changing systems, display lighting and more can turn an ordinary garage or gym into something completely different.
Do you do garden lighting?
Yes. We install both decorative and practical exterior lighting, including patios, pathways, pergolas, steps, driveways, entrances, walls, planting areas and security lighting.
Do you do commercial lighting?
Yes. We undertake commercial electrical work and can provide both practical and bespoke lighting solutions for shops, offices, hospitality spaces, gyms, studios and other commercial properties.
Can you work with our interior designer, builder or joiner?
Yes. Lighting often works best when it's considered alongside the rest of the project. We're happy to coordinate with other trades and professionals, particularly where lighting needs to be incorporated into ceilings, cabinetry, shelving or other architectural details.
How much does bespoke lighting cost?
There isn't a useful one-size-fits-all answer. A simple LED installation and a completely bespoke colour-changing architectural system are very different projects. Price depends on the products, size of the installation, controls, electrical work required, accessibility and complexity of the design. We'll discuss what you're hoping to achieve and your budget, then provide a detailed quotation.
Is expensive lighting actually better?
Sometimes, but not automatically. There are situations where paying more gives you noticeably better light quality, construction, control, appearance or longevity, and others where a more affordable product will do exactly what you need. We'll help you decide where it's worth investing and where it isn't.
Can my lighting be dimmable?
In many cases, yes, provided compatible fittings, lamps, drivers and controls are selected. If dimming is important to you, tell us at the beginning so the system can be designed with that in mind.
Can lighting be smart-controlled?
Depending on the products and system selected, yes. There are many ways of controlling modern lighting, from conventional switches and dimmers to smart systems, apps, scenes and automation. We can discuss what level of control actually makes sense for your project.
I'm renovating. When should I speak to you about the lighting?
As early as possible. If walls and ceilings are being opened, kitchens designed or bespoke joinery manufactured, that's the ideal time to plan where cables, drivers, switches and lighting will go. Planning early gives you considerably more freedom with the final design.
Can I have air conditioning in my home?
In many homes, yes. The first thing we need to establish is whether there are suitable locations for the indoor unit and the external condenser, plus a practical route between them. Every property is different, so rather than working it out yourself, get in touch and we'll assess the space and explain your options. Even if the most obvious position isn't possible, there may be another system or layout that works better.
Does air conditioning provide heating as well as cooling?
Yes. Most modern split systems we install can both heat and cool. In cooling mode the system removes heat from the room; in heating mode the process is effectively reversed and heat is transferred into the room. This means your air conditioning is useful throughout the year, not only in summer.
Does that mean I don't need to use my central heating?
Not necessarily. Air conditioning can provide efficient heating to individual rooms, so you may choose to use it instead of central heating at certain times, for example heating one room you're working in rather than the whole house. Whether it makes sense alongside or instead of your existing heating depends on your property, system and how you use your home.
What's involved in an air conditioning installation?
We'll first assess your space and work out the most appropriate size and type of system, then plan the position of the indoor unit, outdoor condenser, pipework, drainage and electrical connections. The exact installation varies from property to property, which is why we assess each job properly rather than quoting on room size alone. We'll explain what's involved before work begins.
What is the outdoor condenser and where does it go?
The condenser is the outdoor part of a typical split system, working with the indoor unit to transfer heat between your property and outside. It needs a suitable external location with appropriate airflow and access, which could be at ground level, on an external wall or in another suitable location. We'll assess the options and recommend the best position for your installation.
I don't want a big unit ruining the look of my room. Are there discreet options?
Absolutely, and we can consider this from the beginning. Traditional high-level wall units are only one option; depending on the property we can also look at low-level units, ceiling cassettes or concealed ducted systems. Even with wall-mounted systems, careful positioning makes a huge difference. Tell us what matters to you aesthetically and we'll take it into account.
Which type of air conditioning is best for me?
It depends entirely on the space. A wall-mounted unit might be perfect for one bedroom, while a ceiling cassette could suit an open-plan commercial space, and a major renovation might be the time to explore a concealed ducted system. We'll consider room size, layout, usage, aesthetics and budget before recommending the options we think will work best.
Can I have one system covering several rooms?
Potentially, yes. Multi-split systems can allow multiple indoor units to operate from one outdoor system, depending on the design and equipment. For larger homes and commercial properties there are other multi-room solutions too. If you're thinking about several rooms, tell us from the start, as designing the whole project together often produces a much better solution.
Are air conditioning systems noisy?
Modern systems are designed with noise levels in mind and many indoor units operate very quietly, particularly at lower fan settings, though ratings vary between models. If the system is going into a bedroom, home office or other noise-sensitive space, let us know and we'll take sound levels into account when recommending equipment and positioning.
How much does air conditioning cost?
There isn't one price that represents every installation. The cost depends on the type and number of units, capacity required, brand, pipework distances, electrical requirements, access and complexity. A single-room system is very different from a multi-room home or commercial installation, so we provide a detailed quotation based on your actual property and requirements.
How long does installation take?
This depends on the system. A straightforward single-room installation may be completed relatively quickly, whereas multiple units, concealed systems and larger commercial installations require more time. Once we've assessed the project, we can give you a much more accurate idea of the timescale.
Can you install air conditioning while we're renovating?
Yes, and a renovation can be an excellent time to consider it. If walls or ceilings are already being opened up, there may be more opportunities to conceal pipework, electrical supplies, drainage or even parts of the system. If you're planning an extension, loft conversion or major renovation, speak to us before everything is finished so we can explore the options.
Can you install air conditioning in commercial properties?
Yes. We provide air conditioning for both domestic and commercial properties, from individual offices and retail units to larger commercial spaces requiring multiple units, designing the installation around the needs and layout of the building.
Do you offer a warranty?
Yes. We provide a warranty on our workmanship for added confidence in the quality of your installation. We're also registered installers for a number of leading manufacturers, including Samsung and Fujitsu, so depending on the equipment and the manufacturer's current terms, eligible installations can benefit from enhanced manufacturer warranty arrangements. We'll explain exactly what applies to your system before installation.
Do I need to service my air conditioning?
Regular servicing is strongly recommended. It keeps the equipment clean, allows its condition and performance to be checked and can identify potential issues before they develop. Some extended manufacturer warranties may also require servicing at specified intervals. We provide ongoing servicing and maintenance, so we're not simply installing your system and disappearing afterwards.
How often should my air conditioning be serviced?
It depends on the system, how heavily it's used, the environment it's installed in and any manufacturer requirements. A domestic bedroom system used occasionally is very different from equipment running for long periods in a busy commercial environment. We'll advise you on an appropriate maintenance schedule for the equipment we install.
Does air conditioning improve air quality?
Air conditioning can help filter and circulate indoor air, and many modern units include filters designed to capture airborne particles. However, it shouldn't be treated as a replacement for appropriate ventilation or a dedicated air purification system where one is required. If indoor air quality is particularly important to you, let us know and we can discuss the features available.
Is air conditioning expensive to run?
Running costs vary depending on the system, temperature setting, size and insulation of the space, outdoor conditions and how often you use it. Modern inverter-driven systems adjust their output rather than running at maximum power continuously, helping maintain temperature efficiently. We'll make sure the equipment is correctly sized for the space, as the right system is an important part of efficient performance.
Do I need planning permission for air conditioning?
Not always, but there are circumstances where planning rules or other permissions can apply, particularly depending on the property, location, size and positioning of the outdoor equipment. Listed buildings, flats, leasehold properties and certain designated areas can require additional consideration, and landlords or managing agents may need to give permission. If you're unsure, we can discuss the proposed installation, although responsibility for obtaining any required permissions remains with the property owner.
