Types of rewires

Solutions for every home and every situation.

No two properties are exactly the same, which is why we don't take a one-size-fits-all approach to rewiring. We carry out all types of rewires, tailored to your property, your plans and what your existing installation actually needs, whether that's a full rewire, a partial rewire or work carried out while you're still living in the property.

Full rewires

Replacing the electrical wiring throughout the property, along with the associated sockets, switches and other points. Often the right choice for older homes, deteriorating wiring or a major renovation, and your chance to rethink where you need power, from extra sockets to EV charging and air conditioning.

Partial rewires

Not every property needs to be completely rewired. A partial rewire focuses on a particular area, such as a new kitchen, extension, loft conversion or an older section that needs upgrading. We assess the existing installation first and advise honestly, rather than recommending unnecessary work.

Occupied rewires

Yes, we can rewire while you're still living in the property. It takes more planning, so we work in stages where practical, keep key areas usable and talk you through everything beforehand so you know what to expect.

Unoccupied rewires

If the property is empty, for example during a renovation or before you move in, we can generally work more efficiently with less disruption. Rewiring before decorating, flooring or moving furniture in can save a lot of hassle later.

Why rewire?

More than just new cables.

A rewire isn't simply about replacing what's hidden inside your walls. Many older properties were never designed for the amount of electrical equipment we use today. A professionally planned rewire improves safety while creating an installation that actually works for the way you live now.

Safer home

Replacing outdated or deteriorating electrical components can reduce the risk of faults and give you greater confidence in your home's electrical installation.

Greater capacity

From kitchen appliances and home offices to EV chargers, air conditioning and smart technology, your installation needs to support modern life.

Designed around your home

A rewire is your chance to put sockets, switches and lighting where you actually want them, designed around how each room is used.

Peace of mind

Once completed, tested and certified, you'll know the installation has been professionally installed with the future of your home in mind.

What to expect

A straightforward process, with clear communication.

Rewiring a property is a significant job, so knowing what's going to happen makes a huge difference. We'll guide you through every stage, from the initial survey to final testing, so you can plan with confidence.

01

Initial consultation & survey

We assess the property, look at the existing installation and talk through what you're hoping to achieve, including socket positions, lighting, appliances and any future electrical plans.

02

Planning & detailed quotation

We provide a detailed quotation based on your actual property and the work required, so you have a clear idea of what you're paying for, rather than a generic online price.

03

Preparation

Before work begins, we explain what needs to be moved or lifted and how the property should be prepared. For occupied homes, we discuss how to organise the work to minimise disruption.

04

Installation

Our team carries out the rewiring and installation of the agreed electrical points, circuits and equipment, working carefully and keeping you updated as the project progresses.

05

Finishing touches

Once the wiring is installed, we fit the agreed sockets, switches, lighting points and consumer unit as applicable to the project.

06

Testing & certification

The new installation is thoroughly inspected and tested, with the appropriate electrical certification provided for your records.

Property stripped back and prepared for a rewire
Will it disrupt my home?

We plan carefully to minimise disruption.

We don't want to pretend a rewire isn't disruptive. It can be. Electrical cables often need to travel underneath floors, above ceilings and through walls, which can mean lifting floor coverings or floorboards and chasing channels into walls. There will inevitably be some dust, noise and disruption along the way.

What we can do is plan carefully, communicate with you and make the process as manageable as possible. For occupied properties, we'll discuss how the work can be phased and how we can keep essential areas accessible where reasonably practical. For empty properties, we can generally work more freely.

  • Some carpets, flooring or floorboards may need to be lifted to access cable routes.
  • Walls may need to be chased to create routes for new cables.
  • There will be some dust and noise during the work.
  • Electricity will need to be isolated at different stages of the project.
  • We'll explain what preparation is required before work begins.
  • The level of making good required will be discussed as part of your quotation, so you know exactly what is and isn't included.
When should I consider a rewire?

Not sure whether your home actually needs one?

That's completely understandable. Unlike a broken socket or a light that won't turn on, the condition of an electrical installation isn't always obvious, and the age of the property alone doesn't automatically mean it needs rewiring. It's worth a closer look in these situations.

Buying an older property

Worth understanding the condition of the electrics before carrying out other improvements.

Planning a major renovation

If floors are already coming up and walls are being worked on, it's an ideal opportunity to deal with the electrics at the same time.

Installing a new kitchen

Modern kitchens can place significant demand on an installation and often require additional or dedicated circuits.

Extending or converting your home

An extension or loft conversion is a good time to assess whether the existing installation can support the added requirements.

Regularly experiencing problems

Repeated tripping, faults or other issues are worth investigating rather than ignoring.

Unsure about older wiring

If you don't know when the property was last rewired, we can assess it and advise on the most appropriate next step.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions, answered.

How do I know if my home needs a rewire?
You don't necessarily need to work that out yourself, that's what we're here for. There isn't a simple rule that says a house needs rewiring once it reaches a certain age. We consider the type and condition of the existing cabling, the circuits you have, any previous electrical work and whether the installation suits how the property is used today. If you're unsure, get in touch and we'll assess it and give you straightforward advice. If a full rewire isn't necessary, we won't tell you it is.
What's the difference between a full and partial rewire?
A full rewire replaces the electrical wiring throughout the property and installs the associated new points and equipment agreed for the project. A partial rewire focuses on a particular part of the property or installation, for example a kitchen renovation, an extension or one section of older wiring. We'll look at what's already there and advise which option makes sense.
How much does a rewire cost?
Unfortunately there isn't one honest price we can give without seeing the property. The cost depends on the size and layout of your home, whether it's occupied, the condition of the existing installation, how many sockets and lighting points you want, accessibility and the overall scope. We'll discuss what you need and provide a detailed quotation based on your property, rather than a generic figure.
How long does a rewire take?
This depends on the property and the extent of the work. A smaller or empty property is very different from a large occupied family home, and partial rewires differ from complete rewires. Once we've surveyed the property and agreed the scope, we can give you a realistic idea of timescale before the work starts.
Can you rewire our house while we're living in it?
Yes, we can. We appreciate moving out isn't an option for everyone, so we undertake occupied rewires. They need more careful planning because we're working around you and the areas you still need to use. We'll talk through the process beforehand and, where practical, phase the work. If the property can be empty, it can make things quicker and easier for everyone.
Will I lose power during the rewire?
At certain stages, yes. We're replacing parts of the installation, so there will be times when circuits or the supply need to be safely isolated. If you're living in the property, we'll explain how this is likely to affect you and plan the work so you know when interruptions are expected.
Do you replace the consumer unit?
Where the project requires a new consumer unit as part of the rewire, this can be included within the work. We don't treat every property as identical, so we'll assess your existing installation and specify what's required as part of your quotation.
Will you make good the walls and floors afterwards?
This is something we'll agree with you before the job begins. Rewiring can require access beneath flooring and channels chased into walls, so the amount of making good varies considerably. We'll explain where access is required and clearly set out what making good is included in your quotation, so you can plan any decorating without surprises.
Is a rewire messy?
We'd be lying if we said there was no mess at all. Rewiring can involve lifting flooring, drilling and chasing walls, so some dust and disruption is unavoidable. We take care while working in your property and aim to keep disruption to a minimum, but we'd rather be upfront than pretend it's completely mess-free.
When is the best time to have a house rewired?
If you know a property needs rewiring, the easiest time is usually before you've decorated, installed new flooring and settled in. Rewiring fits particularly well alongside a renovation, before moving into a newly purchased property, during an extension or when you're already making significant changes to rooms such as the kitchen. You can still rewire a finished or occupied home, it just needs a little more planning.
I've just bought a house. Should I rewire it before moving in?
If the existing installation needs rewiring, doing it while the house is empty can be a very good opportunity. It gives us much easier access, means you're not living around the work and lets you plan sockets and lighting before decorating and furnishing. But don't assume an older house automatically needs a full rewire, speak to us first and we'll advise based on the actual installation.
Do I need a full rewire if I'm having a new kitchen?
Not necessarily. A new kitchen may require new circuits, additional sockets or alterations to accommodate modern appliances, but whether that means a partial rewire or more extensive work depends on your existing installation. It's something we'd assess before deciding what work is actually necessary.
Can I choose where my new sockets and switches go?
Absolutely, and this is one of the big advantages of rewiring. Think about how you use each room: where the TV goes, where you charge your phone, bedside tables, working from home, or a future electric car or air conditioning. We'll discuss the layout with you so your new electrics aren't just safe, but genuinely convenient to live with.
Can you add extra sockets and lighting while you're rewiring?
Yes. A rewire is the perfect opportunity to rethink your electrical layout. We can discuss additional sockets, lighting points, dedicated appliance supplies and other requirements during the planning stage so they're incorporated from the beginning.
Do you provide certification?
Yes. Once the installation work is complete, it will be inspected and tested and the appropriate electrical certification will be provided for your records.
